History & Significance

Though Orkney and Shetland were formally Norwegian until 1468-69, Scottish merchants and officials had been penetrating the islands throughout the thirteenth century. The Norse population of Shetland periodically resisted Scottish economic and administrative encroachment with force. This skirmish is one of several recorded Norwegian complaints about Scottish interference in their island territory.
