History & Significance

Perth served as the Jacobite capital during the 1715 rising — the Earl of Mar made it his headquarters from September 1715. The Jacobite army camped here for months, awaiting the Pretender's arrival from France. James Francis Edward Stuart ("the Old Pretender") landed at Peterhead in December 1715 and made his way to Perth, but left Scotland in February 1716 as Argyll's government army advanced. The Jacobites burned stores and evacuated. Perth's possession gave the Jacobites control of Perthshire and access to Highland recruitment.
