History & Significance

After the Boyne, Williamite forces advanced to Athlone — the key crossing of the Shannon. The Jacobite garrison under Colonel Richard Grace held the town. When Williamites took the east bank, Grace blew up the bridge. The failed siege halted the Williamite advance into Connacht for the winter.
