As Prince Charles marched south from Glenfinnan in August 1745, the government garrison at Stirling Castle maintained watch over the bridge that had been strategically critical since the battles of 1297 and 1314. Government cavalry from Stirling patrolled north toward the Highland edge. Jacobite scouts from the advancing army reconnoitred the bridge approaches but the main Jacobite column sidestepped Stirling entirely via the Fords of Frew further west. Minor cavalry contacts occurred between government Stirling patrols and Jacobite advance elements as the Jacobites manoeuvred to avoid the well-defended bridge.
