The Battle

History & Significance

The 1322 Great Raid following the Battle of Byland was the most destructive Scottish incursion into Yorkshire. Bruce's forces swept through the North and East Ridings, reaching Beverley — further south and east than any previous raid. The canons of Beverley Minster paid a ransom to preserve the great church. The raid graphically demonstrated Edward II's inability to protect his kingdom north of the Humber and contributed directly to his deposition four years later.
