History & Significance

Moray continued to rebel even after Stracathro in 1130. When the young Malcolm IV came to the throne, Moray rose again. Malcolm IV crushed the revolt and responded by settling Flemish and Norman colonists throughout Moray — a deliberate policy of replacing the Gaelic population with loyal settlers that permanently changed the character of the province. The process completed what David I had begun.
