The Battle

History & Significance

Stephen built a siege castle at Crowmarsh opposite Wallingford to maintain pressure on the imperialist garrison. When Henry FitzEmpress marched to relieve Wallingford in 1153, advance skirmishing occurred between the Crowmarsh garrison and Henry's forces in the meadows along the Thames. These skirmishes preceded the famous confrontation where both armies declined battle.
