The Battle

History & Significance

Francis Lovell and Humphrey Stafford rose against Henry VII in April 1486 in an early Yorkist challenge to the new regime. Lovell threatened to ambush Henry at Middleham during his northern progress. The rising collapsed quickly as local support failed to materialise and Henry offered pardons. Stafford was captured and executed; Lovell fled to Burgundy.
