The Battle

History & Significance

Jack Cade's rebellion began in Kent as a protest against corruption, heavy taxation and the disastrous conduct of the French wars. When a royal force under the Stafford brothers attempted to intercept the rebel march at Sevenoaks, Cade's men ambushed and routed them in the woods and lanes south of the town. Both Staffords were killed. Cade donned Humphrey Stafford's armour and the rebels advanced on London.
