History & Significance

Hertford Castle was taken by French forces advancing north of London during Louis of France's invasion. The capture of Hertford opened the Home Counties north of the Thames to French control and demonstrated the extent of the royalist collapse in 1216. The castle was later recovered by royalists after the Fair of Lincoln and the naval battle of Sandwich.
