History & Significance

Cynric fought the British at Searoburh, identified with Old Sarum near Salisbury, in 552. The fall of this ancient hilltop fortress marked the West Saxon breakthrough onto Salisbury Plain and opened the route west toward Wiltshire and Somerset. Old Sarum was one of the most strategically significant sites in southern Britain.
