Robert of Rhuddlan, who had conquered most of Gwynedd, attacked a Norse fleet off the Great Orme headland in a small boat with only a handful of companions. He was killed and his head was cut off and mounted on the prow of a Viking ship. His death removed the most dangerous Norman in north Wales and created a power vacuum that Gruffudd ap Cynan exploited to rebuild Gwynedd. The episode illustrates both Norman recklessness and the continuing Norse presence in Welsh waters.
