History & Significance

After the dramatic Welsh victories of 1136 and Crug Mawr, Owain Gwynedd and his brother Cadwaladr consolidated control of Ceredigion through continued military operations. Cadwaladr in particular campaigned extensively in Ceredigion. The period 1136-1157 was one of maximum Welsh territorial recovery — Norman power in Wales was at its lowest ebb. Cadwaladr's later quarrel with Owain and his hiring of Norse mercenaries led to complications in the 1140s.
