Philip de Braose extended the de Braose Marcher lordship into the Welsh district of Buellt (Builth) around 1100, fighting Welsh forces to establish Norman control of the upper Wye valley. The de Braose lordship of Buellt became one of the most contested territories in the Marches, changing hands repeatedly between Welsh and Norman lords over the following century.
