The Battle

History & Significance

Following the Medway and Thames crossings, Roman forces moved southwest to secure the Atrebates heartland at Calleva. While Verica had invited Roman intervention, a northern Atrebates faction offered resistance. The occupation of Calleva established the strategic road junction that would become the principal city of the region and seat of the client king Cogidubnus.
