History & Significance

Edward Bruce — Robert's brother, who had been crowned King of Ireland in 1316 — was killed at Faughart near Dundalk. His death ended Scotland's audacious attempt to open a second front against England in Ireland. Edward had been an exceptional commander but the Irish campaign had alienated many Irish lords with its scorched-earth methods.
