History & Significance

During the Anarchy, David I of Scotland exploited English civil war to advance Scottish interests. Despite defeat at the Standard, the Scots conducted repeated raids into Yorkshire and held the northern counties until Henry II forced Malcolm IV to restore them in 1157. Yorkshire communities suffered chronic raiding throughout this period, particularly in the North Riding.
