History & Significance

Edward I summoned a parliament at Carlisle in 1307 specifically to organize his final Scottish campaign. The parliament had an explicitly military character with troops mustering at Carlisle. Edward was already ill and died at Burgh by Sands near Carlisle in July 1307 before he could complete the campaign. The Carlisle parliament is the last major political-military event of his reign.
