History & Significance

Huntingdon Castle was one of several Midland and Fenland fortresses that changed hands during the First Barons War. The baronial-French alliance under Louis of France controlled much of eastern England in 1216-1217. Huntingdon\'s position on the Great North Road made it strategically important. The ultimate baronial defeat at Lincoln (1217) and the naval victory at Sandwich led to the recovery of castles across the region for the young Henry III.

Forces Involved

Baronial: rebel English barons and French supporters. Royal: castle garrison of knights and men-at-arms
