History & Significance

In the early years of his reign Llywelyn the Great repeatedly clashed with Gwenwynwyn of Powys Wenwynwyn, who had ambitions to lead all Welsh princes after the catastrophe of Painscastle 1198. Llywelyn systematically humiliated Gwenwynwyn in a series of engagements that established Gwynedd's dominance over Powys. Gwenwynwyn was eventually expelled from Wales in 1216. The Llywelyn-Gwenwynwyn rivalry was the central conflict in early thirteenth-century Wales.
