The Battle

History & Significance

On 1 August 1265, the night before Evesham, Prince Edward launched a dawn raid on Simon de Montfort junior's army encamped near Kenilworth. Catching them in disorder, Edward destroyed or captured much of the force before it could march to join the elder de Montfort. This devastated the baronial army that was supposed to rendezvous with Simon senior at Evesham, sealing his fate.
