The Battle

History & Significance

After Culloden, Royal Navy vessels swept the western coasts and islands searching for fugitive Jacobite leaders and the hidden weapons and gold that had accompanied the rising. Kintyre, with its largely Campbell (pro-government) population, was comparatively unaffected, but the Catholic islands — Barra, South Uist — where Prince Charles had sheltered during his fugitive period were subjected to systematic searches. These operations involved minor skirmishes as government boats landed parties to search townships. Flora MacDonald was arrested at this time for her role in helping the Prince escape to Skye.
