History & Significance

Prince Edward's dawn raid on Simon de Montfort junior's army encamped outside Kenilworth on 1 August 1265 is a masterpiece of medieval operational planning. Edward had gathered intelligence of the junior army's location, marched through the night, and struck at first light before the army could arm. Many knights were killed or captured in their beds or taken while fleeing in their shirts. The banners captured were later used to deceive Simon senior at Evesham.
