The Battle

History & Significance

One of only two occasions in English history when a reigning king was taken prisoner in open battle. Stephen's mercenary cavalry fled at the first charge, leaving him surrounded. He fought on with his axe until it broke, then drew his sword until that too broke, before surrendering to William de Chesney. Matilda was proclaimed "Lady of the English" — but her arrogance in London led to her own expulsion months later.

Casualties & Losses

Several magnates killed or captured on both sides
