History & Significance

After Edward I's death, Edward II attempted to continue the campaign but eventually withdrew without engaging Bruce. English forces that attempted to cross the River Cree into Wigtownshire to relieve Galloway garrisons encountered resistance from Bruce's forces and the hostile terrain of Galloway. The failure to relieve the south-western garrisons demonstrated the fundamental collapse of English strategic will under Edward II and allowed Bruce to consolidate Galloway in 1308.
