History & Significance

In the early years of his reign Alexander II maintained pressure on England's northern border, pressing Scottish claims to Northumberland and Cumberland. The young king could not pursue the claims militarily but the diplomatic and occasional military pressure continued the pattern established by his father William the Lion. The eventual resolution came with the Treaty of York in 1237 when Alexander formally abandoned the claims in exchange for peace.
