Elements of the Danish fleet under King Sweyn Estrithson attempted landings along the East Anglian coast in 1069, including near the approaches to Bury St Edmunds, as part of the coordinated strategy against Norman England. The monastery of St Edmund was a centre of English sentiment and the Danish forces hoped to exploit local sympathies. Norman forces moved to contain the landings.
