Following the siege of Caerlaverock in 1300, Edward I moved his army through Galloway to assert English authority and punish lords who had supported Scottish resistance. The Galloway campaign of 1300 combined with the Caerlaverock siege represented the high-water mark of Edward's south-western operations. Edward received Scottish submissions at Dumfries and toured the region with a large army, temporarily restoring English administrative control before withdrawing.
