History & Significance

In the weeks after Culloden, pockets of armed Jacobites remained in the Highlands hoping for fresh French support or a continuation of the rising. Small government detachments pursued and dispersed these groups. The Rannoch area — deep in the Highland heartland — saw some of the last organised Jacobite resistance. Cluny MacPherson hid in his famous "Cage" on Ben Alder for years afterwards. Prince Charles evaded capture in the Highlands for five months before escaping to France in September 1746.
