While Wallace was Guardian of Scotland, Stirling Castle remained in Scottish hands. An English force besieged the castle in 1299 but failed to take it and withdrew. The castle's continued resistance was important for morale and showed that Scotland could maintain strategic positions even without Wallace present. Stirling's position astride the main route into northern Scotland made its retention crucial.
