The Battle

History & Significance

Windsor Castle, which had been in French and baronial hands during the First Barons War, was recovered by William Marshal's regent government after the victories of 1217. Its recovery was essential as Windsor was the principal royal stronghold in the Thames valley and its continued occupation by Louis's partisans would have been intolerable. The handover was part of the Treaty of Lambeth terms.
