History & Significance

As Richard I's crusade army assembled in 1190, anti-Jewish violence spread across England. Lynn in Norfolk saw attacks on the Jewish community. Crusaders seeking to cancel their debts participated in the violence. The Lynn pogrom was part of a wave of attacks at Norwich, Stamford, Colchester, and other towns that the royal government was unable or unwilling to suppress during the military preparations for the Third Crusade.
