The Battle

History & Significance

Philip Mowbray, the English constable of Stirling Castle, had agreed under the terms of his 1313 pact with Edward Bruce to surrender if not relieved by 24 June 1314. After the English defeat at Bannockburn he honoured his pledge and surrendered the castle to Robert Bruce. Bruce ordered the castle's fortifications to be largely demolished to prevent its future use as a focus for English re-conquest — his consistent policy of rendering major castles indefensible rather than garrisoning them himself.
