History & Significance

The MacRaes, hereditary constables of Eilean Donan Castle and a clan closely associated with the MacKenzies, were fierce Jacobite supporters in 1715. Before marching to Sheriffmuir they secured their own territory against any government sympathisers. The MacRaes were known as MacKenzie mail-coats because of their loyalty as a fighting clan. Their support was a significant contribution to the Jacobite effort in the northwest.
