History & Significance

Scottish raiding forces operating under Wallace and later independent commanders pushed as far south as the outskirts of Durham in 1299. The city and its great cathedral were not taken but the surrounding county was ravaged. Livestock, grain, and people were carried off. The Bishop of Durham organized defensive measures and the city walls provided protection.
