History & Significance

Edward Bruce, brother of Robert Bruce of Scotland, landed in Ulster with a large Scottish army and immediately defeated the Earl of Ulster. He aimed to become King of Ireland, divert English resources from Scotland, and fulfil an alliance with the O'Neills. The invasion lasted three years and caused devastating famine across Ireland.
