History & Significance

The year 1096 saw a widespread Welsh uprising against Norman rule exploiting the chaos of the First Crusade which had removed many Norman lords from Britain. Welsh forces attacked Norman garrisons across south Wales. Multiple Norman columns were ambushed in the forest terrain where Welsh fighting methods were most effective. The rising demonstrated that Norman rule in Wales was still shallow and could be challenged whenever English central authority was distracted.
