The Battle

History & Significance

The Norman earls of Chester (Hugh the Fat) and Shrewsbury (Hugh of Shrewsbury) had conquered Anglesey and were pursuing Gruffudd ap Cynan when a Norse fleet under Magnus Barelegs of Norway appeared. Magnus himself fired the arrow that killed Hugh of Shrewsbury, whose body fell into the sea. The Normans abandoned Anglesey entirely. Gruffudd ap Cynan, who had been hiding on the island, regained Gwynedd as a result. A remarkable case of a Norse intervention decisively changing Welsh history.
