The Battle

History & Significance

After the Jacobite victory at Killiecrankie on 27 July 1689, the death of Dundee in the moment of triumph paralysed the rising. Colonel Cannon, Dundee's Irish replacement, was a poor commander. Government forces under General Mackay retreated and regrouped. Skirmishing occurred in Atholl as the Jacobite clans attempted to press their advantage without direction. The failure to exploit Killiecrankie swiftly — marching on Perth while the government was shaken — was the critical missed opportunity of the 1689 campaign.
