The Battle

History & Significance

After Bannockburn, Edward Bruce — Robert's brother and designated heir — conducted repeated raids deep into England. The 1316 raid into Cumbria reached Carlisle itself. Though the castle was too strong to take quickly, the surrounding area was devastated. The English north was paying a crippling tribute to avoid Scottish attack. The raids served both economic and psychological purposes — breaking English willingness to continue the war.
