History & Significance

The assembly at Glenfinnan on 19 August 1745 was the formal opening of the 1745 rising. Cameron of Lochiel brought some 700 Camerons, the MacDonalds of Keppoch arrived with their men, and other clans followed. The moment was completed when MacDonald of Keppoch's men arrived with the government prisoners captured at Highbridge — visual proof of the first Jacobite victory. The Duke of Atholl unfurled the standard. A herald read James VIII's proclamation. This was the largest single act of Jacobite clan commitment — Cameron of Lochiel had staked his estate and his life on the rising's success.
