History & Significance

During the second Welsh war of 1282-83, Welsh forces raided into the Marches and disrupted English supply routes. Near Whitchurch in Shropshire, convoys were attacked by Welsh raiders seeking to cut Edward's lines of communication before he could concentrate his forces at Chester. English mounted patrols were deployed to protect the routes.
