History & Significance

Lincoln Castle was one of the great strategic prizes of the Anarchy. Its possession changed hands multiple times between 1141 and 1154. Ranulf, Earl of Chester, played a major role — he had started the crisis that led to the 1141 battle by provoking Stephen to move against Lincoln. The castle's fortifications were strengthened during this period. The siege warfare of the Anarchy in Lincolnshire demonstrates how the civil war destroyed the fabric of local governance.
