The Battle

History & Significance

After James Stuart's departure from Montrose in February 1716 and the collapse of the Jacobite rising, government cavalry advanced rapidly northward to occupy the former Jacobite heartland. Braemar — where the standard had been raised in September 1715 — was reached by government forces. The Jacobite occupation of the northeast Highlands had lasted five months. Government forces entering Braemar found the castle still held by Jacobite sympathisers. A minor confrontation occurred as the government cavalry demanded surrender. The Jacobite garrison submitted without serious resistance. The occupation of Braemar completed the government's restoration of control over the northeast.
