History & Significance

David II invaded England while Edward III was fighting in France at Crécy. He was crushed near Durham and captured — spending the next eleven years as a prisoner in London. The ransom nearly bankrupted Scotland. The battle showed that Scotland could not exploit English absence in France as effectively as hoped.
