History & Significance

Hugh of Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury, joined Hugh of Avranches, Earl of Chester, in a combined campaign to drive Gruffudd ap Cynan off the Welsh mainland and onto Anglesey. The Norman campaign was highly successful until the unexpected arrival of Magnus Bareleg king of Norway whose fleet in the Menai Strait led to Hugh of Shrewsbury being killed by an arrow through the eye. The Normans withdrew immediately and never again mounted such an aggressive campaign into Gwynedd.
