The Battle

History & Significance

The Bishop of Durham held quasi-royal palatinate authority and was expected to defend the northern border. In 1296 following Wallace and the Scottish risings, Bishop Bek of Durham organized palatinate forces to defend County Durham against Scottish raids. He served Edward I's campaigns personally and used his episcopal revenues to fund military operations. The palatinate's military character made it a key element of northern defence.
