History & Significance

The elderly Earl of Northumberland — father of Hotspur — had been in exile after his family's rebellion, but returned with a small force raised in Scotland. He was intercepted at Bramham Moor by the Sheriff of Yorkshire and killed in the fighting. His death ended the Percy family's long campaign against Henry IV. It was a minor skirmish militarily but its dynastic significance was enormous — the last serious direct challenge to Henry IV's kingship.
