History & Significance

Roger, Bishop of Salisbury, established a Norman presence at Kidwelly in Carmarthenshire around 1106, building an early castle to secure the coastal road through south Wales. The Norman advance through Carmarthenshire against Welsh resistance opened much of the south coast to settlement. Welsh forces attempted to contest the advance but could not prevent the establishment of the castle.
