Richard Marshal, Earl of Pembroke, rebelled against Henry III and defeated the King's forces in Ireland. Richard was mortally wounded through treachery shortly after. The battle exposed dangerous divisions in Anglo-Norman Ireland between the older settler families and the English crown's new favourites.
